Do You Need A Breakthrough?

When I think back over my life, I can recall times when I really needed a word from God. I needed His direction, guidance, protection, and deliverance. Many times, as I prayed, I heard clearly from Him. However, there were other times when I fell on my face before the Lord and nothing seemed to have happened. I prayed and cried and still needed answers that didn’t come.

Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation or maybe you are facing one now? I have a suggestion for you. If you genuinely need a breakthrough, consider adding a fast to your prayers.

Fasting is simply willingly going without food, water, or anything important to you for a period of time, for spiritual reasons. It’s important to fill those empty spaces with time with God in prayer and reading scripture. If you do not combine the fast with additional time with the Lord, your fast is only a diet.

Jehoshaphat was the second good king of Judah. (2 Chronicles 20:1-37) When he heard that the Moabites and Ammonites planned to attack Judah, Jehoshaphat was scared – what would they do? He did not let fear overpower him and turned to the Lord for help. He declared a fast in all of Judah and the people joined in. God answered, “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of the [Moabites and Ammonites], for the battle is not yours, but the Lord’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15) Jehoshaphat and Judah were victorious.

There are many other examples in the Bible of individuals and circumstances when fasting provided the answers and help that were needed. It may be time for you to fast if:

~You have a significant decision to make, need guidance, and know God’s will for your life. (Acts 9:1-9

~You are under attack by the enemy. (Esther 3-7)

~You are facing a sudden disaster or problem like the loss of a job, an illness, or an accident. (Ezra 8:21-23)

~You need to stand in the gap for someone else in intercessory prayer. (1 Kings 17:2-16)

~You need to personally repent of sins like unforgiveness, pride, sexual immorality, or uncontrollable anger. (Matthew 17:14-21)

A fast may provide the breakthrough you are looking for. If you have any health concerns or special needs, check with your doctor first.

Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar” (Which is En Gedi). And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord, and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord. -2 Chronicles 20:2-4 (NKJV)
