Purpose Defined: What it is, and What it Isn’t
Let’s start by clearing something up.
Purpose is not your career. It’s not something someone created for you. It doesn’t change with the seasons, and it was never just about you. Your purpose is not what you do, it’s who you are. You can’t turn it on and off. It’s always with you, coming through in everything you say, everything you do, and every space you walk into.
Here’s what I know for sure: when you know your purpose, decisions become easier. Purpose is the compass that guides you toward the life you were created to live. You’re here for a reason, and your legacy is leaving this world in some way better than it would have been without you.
God allows each of us to make that kind of mark. Your gifts, your experiences, your strengths, your passion, they are all tools in the hands of a purposeful God. Your mission may look similar to someone else’s, but you are the only one who can carry it out the way God designed you to.
As a Christian woman, your purpose is to glorify God and help others. It’s never just about you. And while your purpose and calling never change, your assignment shifts depending on the season of life you’re in.
So, what does a woman living in alignment with that purpose actually look like? I’m glad you asked. Here are five powerful characteristics that mark every purpose-aligned woman of faith.
#1 – She Seeks the Kingdom First
A purpose-aligned woman operates with an eternal mindset. She thinks beyond today. She keeps God first and lives in His will, not her own agenda. Seeking the Kingdom first means you’re not chasing the world’s definition of success; you’re chasing significance in the eyes of God.
Jesus put it plainly: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33, NLT)
When the Kingdom is your filter, everything else falls into place.
#2 – She Knows Her Identity in Christ
You may remember the story of Simba in The Lion King. Haunted by guilt and shame after his father’s death, Simba wandered into the wilderness and traded his calling as king for a life of hiding. He forgot who he was because he forgot whose he was.
Sound familiar?
Many of us do the same thing. We allow shame, fear, and the lies of the enemy to make us forget that we are daughters of the King of kings. But your identity was settled before you ever drew your first breath.
You are valuable, bought at a price, because Jesus gave His life for you. You are chosen, handpicked by the sovereign God. You are forgiven; your failures don’t define you. And you are strong in the Lord. He made you with the ability to survive anything that comes your way.
Women were not an afterthought. We were God’s crowning glory, the finishing touch on His creation. Don’t let the enemy convince you otherwise. “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NLT)
Know who you are, Queen.
#3 – She Believes She is Called for More
For 28 years, I practiced law as an attorney and a judge. And I was good at it. But being good at something doesn’t mean it’s what God wants you to do forever. There came a moment when I knew that season was over, when God was calling me to step into more of who He created me to be.
More of Him. More of His calling. More impact for the Kingdom.
That’s the kind of “more” I’m talking about. Not more money or more stuff but more significance, more Kingdom work, more of the abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10: “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
You have gifts, skills, and talents that will make a real difference in this world, in your family, in your community, in the lives of people you haven’t even met yet. Don’t shrink back from the more God is calling you into.
#4 – She is Empowred, and She Empowers Others
In the movie, Wonder Woman, there’s a powerful scene where Diana throws off her coat, raises her shield, and crosses no man’s land – a battlefield full of explosives that no soldier had dared to cross. By doing so, she empowered the entire army to move forward.
That’s what a purpose-aligned woman does.
True empowerment for a woman of faith isn’t about self-reliance. It’s about knowing who you are in Christ and operating in the power of the Holy Spirit who lives inside of you. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” (Acts 1:8, NLT)
And here’s the beautiful secret: the more you empower others, the more empowered you become. As Booker T. Washington said, “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” When you help someone else see the greatness God placed in them, you’ll find yourself walking in a freedom and confidence you never knew before.
#5 – She is an Action-Taker
Remember the parable of the talents? The master gave three servants different amounts of money and then left on a journey. When he returned, two servants had multiplied what they were given, but one had buried his talent in the ground out of fear and returned nothing.
The master was not pleased.
Every time we bury our gifts instead of using them, we’re telling God, “I don’t trust You.” We’re choosing fear over faith. And God did not give us a spirit of fear. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NLT)
Is God calling you to start? To step out? To say yes? Don’t bury what He placed in you. Use it for His glory.
Where are You in Alignment?
Here’s your assignment: use these five characteristics as a personal check-in.
- She seeks the Kingdom first.
- She knows her identity in Christ.
- She believes she is called for more.
- She is empowered, and she empowers others.
- She is an action-taker.
Where are you showing up in alignment with your purpose – glorifying God and serving others? Where do you need to make some changes? Celebrate what’s going well and commit to growing in the areas that need attention.
You were made for this. Now go live like it.
