Have you ever told yourself that if you could just get the answers, if you could just see how your life turns out, then you would finally have some peace? So many of us live right there, in that holding pattern, certain that calm is waiting for us on the other side of certainty. I want to gently turn that idea upside down for you today.
The Folded Map on the Table
For twenty years now, I have been coaching and teaching Christian women. Twenty years of sitting across from women in church basements and conference rooms, on phone calls and video screens, women with Bibles open on their laps and questions written all over their faces. And in all that time, no matter how different these women are from one another, almost every single one of them wants the very same thing. They want to know all the answers. Every last one.
I have come to picture it like this. A woman sits down with me, and it’s as if she has set a folded map on the table between us. She doesn’t want to take one step until that whole map is opened flat, every road traced, every turn labeled, every destination circled in red ink. She wants to know where she will end up before she will agree to begin. And here is the part that tugs at my heart. While she waits for God to hand her that fully opened map, she has convinced herself that she can’t possibly have any peace until she holds it in her two hands.
Maybe you are that woman right now. You’re waiting on God to make your calling crystal clear. You want to know for sure what He created you to do, and somewhere along the way, you started believing that peace of mind lives on the far side of clarity. I want to tell you the truth today. The women I have watched walk in the most peace are not the women who finally got all their answers. The map almost never opens all the way. The women who walk in peace are the ones who made a different choice while they were still waiting.
The Real Question While You Wait
Here’s what I mean. Every woman who sits across from me eventually reaches the same crossroads. She has a decision to make, though it’s not the decision she thinks she’s making. She thinks the question is, ” Will God answer me?” The real question is, “What will I do with my mind while I wait?” She can trust God and keep her peace, or she can stare at everything she does not know yet and watch her peace slip right through her fingers.
That is the whole thing. That’s the choice. Scripture has been telling us this all along.
Trust Comes Before the Path
In Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV), Solomon writes, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Notice the order, because it is everything. He does not say lean on your own understanding and then trust God once it all makes sense. He says trust first. The straight path comes after the trust, not before it. So many of us have that backwards. We stand there saying, Lord, show me the path and then I will trust You, while God patiently says, ” Daughter, trust Me, and watch what I do with the road.”
Then look at what Paul tells us in Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT). “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” Think about that last line for a moment. The peace He offers exceeds anything we can understand. It does not wait for your understanding to catch up. You do not have to solve the puzzle to feel calm. You have to bring the puzzle to Him.
The Next Step You Already Know
I remember a season when I sat with a woman who was absolutely certain she could not move forward until God told her exactly what her calling was. She had a good heart and a real hunger to serve Him. She had set that map on the table and folded her arms, and she was not going to budge. I asked her one question. While you are waiting for the full map, what is the next single step you already know to take? She got quiet, and then she admitted she had known the next step for months. She just didn’t want to take it until she could see the whole journey first.
And that, my friend, is the trap. We hold our peace hostage to a map God rarely hands out all at once. He tends to give us light for the next step and not floodlights for the next ten years. Psalm 119:105 (ESV) says it plainly. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” A lamp to your feet lights the ground right in front of you. It was never meant to light up the whole highway.
Three Anchors to Hold While You Wait
So let me give you three anchors to hold onto while you wait. First, remember that God’s silence is not God’s absence. When He has not told you what He is doing, it does not mean He is doing nothing. Second, fix your mind on Him instead of on the gap. Isaiah 26:3 (ESV) promises, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Third, take the step you already have. Faith is rarely the whole staircase. It is usually the next step.
Your calling will come into focus in His timing. Habakkuk 2:3 (NLT) reminds us the vision has an appointed time, and if it seems slow, we wait patiently, for it will surely take place. Until then, you do not need the whole map to walk in peace. You only need to keep your hand in the hand of the One who already holds it.
So, this week, write down every question stealing your peace. Beside each one, write the words, “I trust God with this.” Then circle the one next step you already know to take, and go take it. Watch what God does with your peace when you stop guarding the answers and start guarding your trus
