The #1 Key to Dreaming With God

During our first coaching session together, my client, Ella, shared this story with me.

She shared how she recently sat at her kitchen table, staring at a stack of unpaid bills. Her coffee had gone cold, but she didn’t care. The dreams she once had in her heart – writing a book, starting her own business, leading a women’s ministry – felt like distant memories. They were overshadowed by everything on her plate in her daily life.

“I don’t have time for that now,” she told herself, scrolling mindlessly through social media. Each post seemed to highlight someone else’s accomplishments: a new career, a growing family, a dream vacation. Ella couldn’t help but wonder, “What happened to me? When did I stop dreaming?”

She wanted to blame her circumstances – her busy job, her responsibilities at church, the weight of caring for her family – but deep down, Ella knew the real issue wasn’t her schedule. It was her mindset.

Somewhere along the way, she had stopped believing her dreams mattered. And she stopped believing God had a plan for her.

Have you ever found yourself saying, “I don’t have time to dream,” “Life is just too hard right now,” or “It’s too late for me”?

Maybe you once had big dreams, but somewhere along the way, those dreams got buried under the weight of your daily responsibilities, setbacks, or doubts.

I want to tell you something: those things aren’t the real reason you’ve stopped dreaming.

The #1 key to dreaming with God isn’t more time, fewer obstacles, or a perfect life – it’s your mindset.

Dreaming with God requires a shift in how you see yourself, your circumstances, and most importantly, the God who has created you for a purpose, calling, and assignment.

It’s not too late, and you’re not too busy.

You just need to reframe your mindset and step into the vision God has for your life.

Why Mindset Matters When Dreaming with God

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” What you think and believe about yourself shapes how you live. If you believe you’re too old, too busy, or not good enough to pursue the dreams God has placed in your heart, those thoughts will hold you back.

But the truth is, God has already equipped you with everything you need to live out His plans for your life. The question is – do you believe it?

Your mindset is the lens through which you see the world, yourself, and even God. When your mindset is rooted in fear, doubt, or excuses, it takes away your ability to dream boldly and align your heart with God’s purpose. But when your mindset is rooted in faith, trust, and God’s promises, the possibilities are unlimited.

The Lies That Hold You Back

Many Christian women stop dreaming because they’ve accepted certain lies as truth. Let’s address some of the most common ones:

  1. “I don’t have time.”
The reality is, you make time for what matters most. If dreaming with God isn’t a priority, your schedule will reflect that. But when you shift your mindset to believe that God’s dreams for you are worth pursuing, you’ll begin to make room for them in your life.
  2. “Life is too hard right now.”
Life is hard, but it’s often those hardest seasons that God brings forth the greatest dreams. Remember Joseph? His journey from the pit to the palace was marked by trials, but his mindset – rooted in trust and obedience – kept him aligned with God’s vision.
  3. “It’s too late for me.”
God doesn’t work on our timeline. Sarah was 90 years old when she gave birth to Isaac, fulfilling God’s promise to Abraham. Your age, circumstances, or past failures don’t disqualify you from God’s purpose. Instead, God uses them to prepare you for the calling He’s given you.

How to Reframe Your Mindset to Dream with God

Reframing your mindset is about replacing limiting beliefs with God’s truth. Here are three steps to help you get started:

1. Renew Your Mind Daily

Romans 12:2 urges us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Spend time in God’s Word, allowing it to reshape how you think. Replace thoughts like, “I can’t,” with Scriptures like Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Practical Tip: Create a list of affirmations based on Scripture and read them aloud every morning. For example:

  • “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
  • “God has a purpose and plan for my life.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

2. Challenge Negative Thoughts

When a thought like, “I’m not enough,” creeps in, ask yourself, “Is this what God says about me?” If the answer is no, reject it. Instead, declare the truth: “I am chosen, loved, and equipped by God.” (Ephesians 1:4)

Practical Tip: Keep a journal of your thoughts. When you notice recurring negative patterns, write them down, counter them with Scripture, and pray for God’s strength to overcome them.

3. Partner with God in Dreaming

Dreaming with God isn’t about coming up with your own plans and asking Him to bless them. It’s about seeking His will, trusting His timing, and aligning your heart with His purpose. Ask God to show you His vision for your life and trust Him to guide you one step at a time.

Practical Tip: Set aside time each week to pray specifically about the dreams God has placed on your heart. Write down what you feel He is revealing to you and commit to taking one small action step toward that dream. Remember – small steps lead to big results.

A Mindset Shift Leads to Transformation

Changing your mindset isn’t always easy, but it’s the key to unlocking the dreams God has for you. Remember, He is able to do “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” (Ephesians 3:20) When you shift your focus from your limitations to God’s limitless power, you’ll begin to see new possibilities.

Your Next Step

If you’ve stopped dreaming, it’s time to start again.

Not because you’re strong enough, but because the God who placed those dreams in your heart is faithful to bring them to fruition. The first step is to believe it’s possible. The next step is to join a community of women who are ready to dream boldly with God.

Ella’s Transformation

After working together, Ella sent me an email with a new story.

Months later, I found myself sitting in the same kitchen, but this time, the scene was different. The bills were still there, and my to-do list was just as long, but my heart was lighter. A notebook sat open in front of me, filled with ideas for the book I was finally writing.

It hadn’t been easy to start dreaming with God again, but I had taken the first step: I shifted my mindset. Coaching had taught me that I could begin to trust that God’s plans for my life weren’t limited by my circumstances or my past. With each small step of faith, I could see the life God was calling me to – a life of purpose, impact, and joy.

As I sipped my coffee, I whispered a prayer: “Thank You, God, for showing me it’s never too late to dream again with You.”

Let’s Dream Together

Just as it was not too late for Ella, it’s not too late for you either. You’re not too busy, and life is not too hard for God to work. Your dreams are valid because God gave them to you. Let’s reframe your mindset, embrace His truth, and start dreaming with Him again.
