Have you ever woken up tired?
Not just need-one-more-hour-of-sleep tired, but tired in your bones – emotionally, mentally, and spiritually? The kind of tired that makes you sigh before your feet touch the floor? If so, you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not unseen.
Many Christian women are exhausted, not because we’re weak, but because we’re carrying more than God ever asked us to carry. We love deeply, serve faithfully, and show up consistently. But somewhere in between appointments, responsibilities, ministry, caregiving, and holding everyone else together, we forget that Jesus never told us to do it all in our own strength.
He simply said: “Come to Me.”
In Matthew 11:28, He says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Not hustle harder.
Not push through.
Not figure it out alone.
Just come.
But if we’re honest, when life gets heavy, coming to Jesus isn’t always our first response. Sometimes we take on more instead of stepping back. We say yes when our soul is begging for no. We keep pouring even when our cup is running dry. We ignore the warning signs until we’re sitting in the doctor’s office or crying in the parking lot or lying awake at night wondering, How did I get here?
Burnout doesn’t start with exhaustion.
It starts with over-carrying.
Burnout is Not Just Busyness – It’s Burden-Bearing Without God
We live in a society that celebrates hustle culture. Productivity is praised. Busyness is applauded. Women who “do it all” are admired, even while they crumble inside. But God never called us to be superwomen. He called us to be surrendered women.
Burnout is often the result of:
- Saying yes to obligations God didn’t assign
- Carrying responsibilities that were never meant to be ours
- Trying to meet every need instead of discerning our God-given lanes
- Pouring out continuously without being poured into
- Operating in strength instead of grace
True rest is not just sleep.
It’s soul rest.
Rest that restores, not just relaxes.
Rest that comes from God, not from downtime alone.
Jesus came not just to save us, but to restore us.
He promises in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.”
Abundant life isn’t burnout, overwhelm, or guilt for resting. It looks like peace, joy, purpose, margin, and clarity. Rest that doesn’t require earning.
But many of us are stuck in survival mode, running endlessly on empty, numbing ourselves with scrolling or busyness, functioning but not flourishing. Survival mode may feel normal, but it is not God’s normal for you.
A Story Many Women Will Recognize
Let me paint a picture.
I have a friend, we’ll call her Angela. She loved God and loved people. If the church needed help, she was there. If family needed support, she rearranged her schedule. If anyone called, she showed up, no matter how drained she already felt. She was dependable and deeply exhausted.
One day, while reading Matthew 11:28, she felt God whisper, “You’re serving Me, but you’re not resting in Me.”
That moment changed her. She realized she was doing many good things, but not all of them were God-things. She wasn’t operating from grace. She was operating from grind.
And for many of us, that hits home.
Sometimes burnout isn’t caused by what God asked us to do…but what we added to our assignment.
The Burnout Inventory: A Simple Exercise to Help You Release What’s Not Yours
Awareness is the beginning of healing. So, I want to help you see what may be draining you spiritually and emotionally, not to overwhelm you, but to free you.
Grab a journal, your Notes app, or a sheet of paper.
This will only take a few minutes.
Step 1 — Write down everything that feels heavy.
Work, ministry, caregiving, responsibilities, internal pressure, decision fatigue, emotional load – write it all.
Step 2 — Highlight what God actually assigned to you.
Not what guilt asked.
Not what habit maintained.
Not what people expected.
Ask yourself:
- Did God tell me to do this?
- Am I carrying this out of fear, guilt, or obligation?
- If I laid this down, would the world stop, or would I finally breathe?
Sometimes the burden we’re carrying doesn’t belong to us. Sometimes it belongs to God.
Psalm 55:22 tells us to: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.”
When you release what drains you, you make space for what sustains you.
Rest is Not Laziness – Rest is Obedience
Let’s be clear: Rest is not optional. It’s biblical. Even Jesus rested. He withdrew from crowds, silenced demands, and stepped away from noise. If the Son of God honored rest, why do we think we don’t need it?
Rest is kingdom stewardship.
Rest is spiritual warfare.
Rest is how we remain aligned, renewed, and effective.
The enemy doesn’t always need to destroy you; he just needs to drain you.
A distracted woman rarely sees her purpose clearly.
An exhausted woman rarely moves with confidence.
A burned-out woman rarely hears God’s voice with clarity.
But a rested woman? She’s dangerous.
Focused.
Faith-filled.
Purpose-driven.
Spirit-led.
And that is who you are becoming.
This Week’s Reset Challenge
Before the week ends — take 10 minutes for your Burnout Inventory.
- List everything weighing you down
- Highlight what God assigned to you
- Pray over the rest and ask God what needs to be released
Let the Holy Spirit guide you. Some things may shift immediately. Others gradually. Some may require boundaries. But every release creates room for rest, and room for God.
Your exhaustion is not a sign of failure. It’s a signal for renewal.
God is not asking you to do more.
He’s inviting you to come to Him.
A Final Word for Your Heart
If today finds you weary, I want you to hear this: You were not created to carry everything. You were created to walk with the One who carries you.
Rest is not the reward for finishing your work. Rest is part of your work.
It’s worship.
It’s trust.
It’s obedience.
And it’s time to receive the gift God has been offering: Rest.
I’m cheering for you, praying for you, and walking this journey with you. The R.E.F.R.E.S.H. reset begins right here, with release, reflection, and returning to God as your source of strength.
Next week, we’ll dig deeper into how to stop striving and step into true rest – not the kind the world gives, but the kind your soul has been craving.
Until then… breathe, release, reset, and rest in Him.
