A Shift From Striving To Resting In God

Have you ever laid down at night feeling like you ran a marathon with your mind and emotions, even if you didn’t move much at all? You planned, you managed, you showed up, you carried it all – and still felt like it wasn’t enough?

If that’s familiar, you’re in good company.

Many Christian women live in a place of holy exhaustion. They are committed to God, committed to family, committed to purpose, but stretched thin and quietly overwhelmed. We pray, but we worry. We serve, but we feel depleted. We love God deeply, but we’re worn out from trying to hold life together with our bare hands.

It’s not because you’re weak. It’s because you’re carrying more than God asked you to. And He’s inviting you into something better, lighter, and more holy – surrender.

Striving is Heavy, but Surrender is Holy

We’ve been conditioned to believe productivity equals worth. That rest must be earned. That slowing down is irresponsible. That we have to be the strong ones, always.

But Scripture offers a different rhythm. 1 Peter 5: 7 reminds us to “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Not carry it.

Not tolerate it.

Not manage it.

But to Cast it.

Surrender is not giving up. It’s giving it to God.

It’s saying, “Lord, I trust You more than I trust my ability to control this.”

Striving vs. Surrender: a Heart Check

Here’s a simple question: Are you operating in effort or in grace?

There is a difference.

Striving sounds like:

• “It’s all on me.”
• “I can’t stop, or everything will fall apart.”
• “I don’t have time to rest.”
• “I have to hold it all together.”

Surrender sounds like:

• “God is with me.”
• “I can rest because He carries what I cannot.”
• “I don’t have to do it all today.”
• “I trust His timing more than my own.”

One leads to burnout and the other leads to peace.

Working Hard Isn’t the Problem, Carrying It Alone Is

God values diligence and excellence. But He never intended for you to live fueled by hustle instead of the Holy Spirit.

There’s a difference between working hard in your strength and working with God’s grace as your supply.

Striving (Self-Powered):

  • Draining
  • Pressure-filled
  • Fear-driven
  • Never enough

Surrender (Grace-Powered):

  • Peaceful
  • Sustainable
  • Aligned
  • Fruitful

Psalm 55:22 reminds you to “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.”

When God is the One carrying you, you can work without losing yourself.

You can serve without burning out.

You can build without breaking down.

Real strength is not in doing everything, it’s in knowing what is God’s to carry.

Learning to Let Go When Control Feels Safer Than Trust

Releasing control is vulnerable, especially for high-achieving women. We plan, we organize, we support others, and we anticipate needs.

Control can be comforting – at least temporarily. But it’s a heavy comfort.

Imagine you’re holding a heavy bag full of responsibilities, some yours, many not.

Jesus stands beside you with open hands, saying, “Give it to Me.”

And we respond, “But if I put it down, what if something falls apart?” “What if people get disappointed?” “What if I let go and the outcome changes?”

And Jesus whispers, “Daughter, you were never meant to carry it alone.”

Surrender begins when we stop fearing what letting go will cost, and start trusting what holding on is costing us.

How to Release What’s Too Heavy

Letting go is not passive; it’s active faith.

Here are three simple steps you can implement right now::

1. Pause & Acknowledge

Be honest: Lord, I’m tired. I’m carrying too much.

Awareness breaks denial. Naming the weight weakens it.

2. Ask God for Help

Not just “fix this,” but “carry this with me.”

Invite Him into your calendar, decisions, deadlines, and responsibilities.

3. Trust His Timing

Stop forcing what God wants to unfold. Delay isn’t denial, it’s development.

You don’t have to rush what God is growing.

You don’t have to push what God is planting.

And you don’t have to hustle for what grace will provide.

Your Practice for the Week: The Surrender Prayer

Speak this over your life each morning:

“Lord, I surrender my plans, my schedule, and my striving.
Lead me today.
Carry what is too heavy for me.
I release control and receive Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Say it until your heart, mind, and soul believe it.

Let surrender be your morning rhythm before the rush begins.

A Final Word for Your Heart

You are not failing because you’re tired. You’re tired because you’ve been faithfully holding too much.

God is not asking you to be strong enough. He’s asking you to surrender enough.

Let the weight fall from your shoulders and let peace rise in your chest. Let the One who holds the world hold you too.

You don’t have to carry everything. You only have to carry what God assigns. And even then, He carries you. This is the invitation to surrender. This just might be the rest your soul has been craving.
