“Then Jesus answered, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed from that very hour.” –Matthew 15:28 (NIV)
Some passages in Scripture stop us in our tracks. They challenge us, stretch us, and force us to slow down long enough to really see what God is unveiling. The story of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 is one of those passages. On the surface, her encounter with Jesus may feel uncomfortable, almost troubling. She was desperate, hurting, and pleading for help, yet it appeared as though Jesus ignored her. His silence feels strange. His initial words sound harsh. But if we lean in with prayerful curiosity, something beautiful emerges.
This is not a story of rejection. This is a story of remarkable persistence, bold faith, and a Savior who responds to those who refuse to let go.
Let’s walk through it together.
A Desperate Mother, A Silent Savior
Matthew tells us that Jesus had withdrawn to the region of Tyre and Sidon, a Gentile territory. While He was there, a Canaanite woman approached Him with a painfully urgent request: “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.”(Matthew 15:22)
She was not Jewish. She was not part of the covenant community. She had no religious credentials, no heritage, and no spiritual résumé to present. By every cultural standard of that day, she had no right to ask anything of Jesus. But desperation will make you bold, and pain will make you persistent. This mother had one thing going for her: she believed Jesus could do what no one else could.
Yet the Bible says: “Jesus did not answer a word.” (Matthew 15:23)
Silence.
Have you ever prayed and felt like heaven was quiet?
Have you ever cried out to the Lord and wondered if your words even reached Him?
Silence is not absence, and delay is not denial. Jesus was not ignoring her. He was inviting her deeper.
The Test That Revealed Her Tenacity
The disciples, clearly annoyed, urged Jesus to “send her away.” They were tired of her crying out. But Jesus responded with a statement that seems confusing at first: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24)
Still, she came closer. She knelt. She worshiped. And she cried out again, simply: “Lord, help me!”
When you are truly desperate, your prayers get shorter and more powerful. No long explanations. No perfect wording. No eloquence. Just three raw, faith-filled words: “Lord, help me.”
Then Jesus replied: “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” (Matthew 15:26)
This is the moment many people skim over because, at first glance, it feels harsh. But Jesus was not insulting her. He was testing the depth of her faith. He was drawing out the treasure He already saw within her.
And she passed the test with flying colors.
She replied: “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” (Matthew 15:27)
What humility. What wisdom. What unwavering confidence in who Jesus is.
She was saying, “Lord, I may not have a seat at the table, but just one crumb of Your power is enough to change my daughter’s life.”
That’s when the heavens opened.
The Reward of Relentless Faith
Jesus, moved by her persistence and belief, said: “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” (Matthew 15:28)
Her daughter was healed instantly.
This is the only time in Scripture where Jesus describes someone’s faith as “great.”
Not Peter’s faith. Not the disciples’ faith. Not the religious leaders’ faith.
A Gentile woman, a mother with no spiritual pedigree but a heart full of fierce, unshakeable faith.
Why was her faith great?
Because she refused to quit.
When God Seems Silent to You
Just like the Canaanite woman, there will be moments when your prayers feel like they are hitting the ceiling. You’ve asked, and asked, and asked again. You’ve prayed with tears in your eyes. You’ve cried out for your children, your marriage, your health, your business, your calling, or your breakthrough.
And the silence is deafening.
But hear this, daughter of God: You are not like the Canaanite woman.
She approached Jesus as an outsider.
You approach Him as a beloved child.
You don’t beg for crumbs. You’ve been given a seat at the table.
Jesus may not answer immediately, but He always hears you.
He may not respond the way you expect, but He always cares.
He may delay, but He never denies what is aligned with His will and His love.
Matthew 7:8 reminds us: “For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
Notice the verbs: asks, seeks, knocks. These are not one-time actions. They are continuous. Ongoing. Persistent.
Why Persistence Matters in Prayer
Persistence does not change God – it changes you.
It aligns your heart with His. It strengthens your faith muscles. It clarifies your desires. It builds intimacy between you and the Father.
And perhaps most beautifully, persistence is an act of worship.
Every time you keep praying when you could have stopped…
Every time you keep believing when doubt whispers…
Every time you keep knocking when the door seems shut…
You are telling God, “I trust You more than what I see.”
And God rewards that kind of faith.
When You Feel Like Giving Up, Remember This:
1. Jesus delights in your voice.
He never grows weary of hearing you pray. Your cries do not annoy Him. Your persistence does not burden Him. Your requests do not overwhelm Him.
2. Delay is often a divine setup.
God uses waiting to mature you, strengthen you, and prepare you for the blessing.
3. Persistence positions you for breakthrough.
Great faith is not loud faith; it’s persistent faith. Quiet faith. Determined faith. Faith that refuses to walk away.
Keep Knocking – Your Answer is Coming
If you have been praying and praying and nothing seems to be shifting, take heart. God is working in the unseen places. He is orchestrating what you cannot perceive. He is strengthening you even as He is preparing your blessing.
Just like the persistent woman, you may feel discouraged, tired, or overlooked. But don’t stop now. Don’t walk away. Don’t let go.
Your Savior sees you.
Your prayers matter to Him.
And your breakthrough may be closer than you think.
Keep asking.
Keep seeking.
Keep knocking.
Your persistent faith will not be ignored.
God hears you, and in His perfect time, He will answer.
