Did you watch the Steve Harvey Show, a sit-com that was on the old The WB network from 1996 to 2002? It’s one of my favorite comedies and I still watch it from time to time on Prime Video. There were lots of episodes that I loved, but I just watched one recently where Steve was leading his class through through an exercise wthere they were supposed to write down their goals – something like a bucket list. To help explain what he wanted them to do, Steve brought his personal list to class and shared it with his students.
As he read his list, one of the students in his class told him that he had not done any of the things on his list. The more Steve read, the more he realized that even through he had had a great music career, he still hadn’t accomplished anything on his bucket list. Steve got depressed thinking life had passed him by.
Of course, since this was a 30-minute sit-com everything works out and Steve got over his depression and all ended well.
But that episode got me thinking about the women and clients I talk to on a regular basis who think it’s too late to do the things on their bucket lists. They have continually told themselves that they would get to them someday. And now, they think they have missed their chance because Someday got them off track.
Speaker and author, Tony Robbins, once said, “The road to Someday leads to a town called Nowhere.”
It’s so easy to put your plans, goals and dreams on hold. There’s always so much to do and never enough time in which to get it done. Like a lot of people, your “To Do” list is probably much longer than you want it to be.
When it comes to setting priorities and managing your time, it may seem practical to do what’s most urgent and move your plans, goals and dreams to the bottom of your list. The problem with that strategy is that you may never achieve your heart’s desire.
For too many people, waiting for someday to start a business, go back to school, take a trip – you name it – means it will never happen. A someday mindset will have you planted firmly in the land of nowhere.
It’s time to take your life off layaway. To help you get started, try these actions steps.
Make a List of All the Things You’d Like to Do in Your Life Time – A few years ago, everyone was making a list of the 100 things they wanted to accomplish during their life time. Maybe you made your own list. If you did, pull it out. If you didn’t join the craze, take time now to make your “Top 100″ list. Don’t edit, don’t doubt, just write.
Make a Plan – Decide how you want to tackle your list. Do you want to start at number one? Do you want to start with the easiest tasks first? Do you want to pull numbers out of a hat? If you don’t have a plan, chances are it will never happen.
Select Your First Item – Once you’ve decided on a plan, get started with your first selection. Write it in on your calendar; set it on your cell or tablet. Tell the people in your life what you’re up to, so that they can support you. Decide how you will celebrate once you’ve achieved success.
Take Action Every Day – Every single day, do at least one thing that’s going to help you accomplish the goal you’re working on. It can be as simple as acknowledging yourself for trying. The important thing is that you’re taking small steps every day to make things happen.
If you needed a sign that it’s time to get off the road to Someday, this is it. You don’t want to end up in Nowhere. It’s time to get to work on your list of dreams, goals, and plans. You CAN do this!
