From Overcoming To Becoming

One of my favorite songs is Overcomer by the late Mandisa. Every time I listen to it, I’m reminded that as children of God, our struggles do not define us – we are defined by our victory through Christ. Revelation 12:11 declares, “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” We are truly overcomers!

But as I thought about what it means to overcome, a new question came to my mind: Who am I becoming as I overcome?

Because overcoming is not just about making it through the storm, it’s about being transformed in the storm.

The Process of Overcoming Shapes Us

We often pray for a breakthrough, for victory, for deliverance. And God is faithful to bring us through. But what about the process? Romans 5:3–4 reminds us, “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Every challenge we face is not only an opportunity to overcome, it’s also an opportunity to become.

  • As we overcome fear, we become courageous.
  • As we overcome doubt, we become faith-filled.
  • As we overcome rejection, we become secure in our identity in Christ.

Overcoming without becoming leaves us with victory, but not growth. God wants more for us than just to “get through.” He wants us to be transformed into the likeness of Christ through every battle.

Becoming More Like Christ

The real purpose of every trial is not only victory, but also transformation. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says, “And we all… are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

That means every challenge you face is a chance to become more like Jesus:

  • More compassionate toward others who struggle.
  • More resilient in faith.
  • More rooted in God’s Word.
  • More steadfast in prayer.

When you keep your eyes fixed only on overcoming, you may miss the deeper work God is doing in you. But when you focus on becoming in the process, you will see how every hardship is shaping you for a greater purpose.

Walking as an Overcomer and a Becomer

So how do we live this out?

  1. Shift Your Focus. Don’t just ask, “How can I get through this?” Ask, “Who is God calling me to become through this?”
  2. Anchor Yourself in Scripture. The Word of God renews your mind and shapes your identity. (Romans 12:2)
  3. Celebrate the Process. Don’t just celebrate when the storm ends. Celebrate who you’re becoming while the storm is raging.

Final Encouragement

Yes, you are an overcomer through Christ Jesus. But don’t stop there. Lean into the process of becoming. Trust that God is shaping you into the woman He designed you to be. Every trial is not just about conquering, it’s about transforming.

Remember: Overcoming proves your victory. Becoming reveals your identity. And both together declare the glory of God at work in your life.
